treatment redraft

Scene 1 – Verse 1 The opening sequence of the music video is of the camera focused on letters on the floor. The camera slowly pans up and around to reveal the lead vocalist, whom is laying in a pile of love letters. whilst he is singing to the pre recorded backing track.Scene 2 - Chorus 1 We now cut to a shot of the band on stage but only the lead vocalist is visible, the other members are blacked out, in the dark. We would also have letters from the initial scene falling on the band members. Finally we would create this scene using eclectic shots such as dolly shots, pans, jib shots etc. Scene 3 - Chorus 1 A shot from the outside looking through a window at a/the girl. We now have a reverse of the previous shot where we see the girls back and the lead singer outside singing. The singer would then fade away to the lyrics "memories that are clear to fade" Scene 4 - Verse 2 We then see her leading him by the hand into the woods, as she does so his hand slips from hers and they become separated. A camera shot shows their hands moving apart and so the distance between increasing. This then goes to a shot of the lead singer running around in various directions in an attempt to find her. We would have camera shots of him running towards the camera and high angle shots to give the feeling of being lost. Scene 5 - Chorus 2 In this scene there will be a collection of shots of the whole band performing. We are also hoping to get in an audience to give more of a feel of a live performance. Another idea, we would like to record the singers at twice the speed therefore allowing us to slow the video down as professional videos do, this makes it look much more fluent.Scene 6 – Verse 3 + Chorus 3 Here we will show our vocalist sitting on a sofa watching tv when the band burst in and start performing the chorus. The camera will then cut back to the live performance and end.

This was our preliminary idea on how it should end, a new ending has been implemented.

Risk Assessment

Risk Assessment Type-up;1 Are the technical crew competent? The minimal amount of "technical crew" needed are well aware of the also minima risks involved. They are used to the equipment and are able to perform their said tasks(s)2 Falls of men and equipment? Staff have no requirements of being at heights for equipment or other reasons. 3 Temporary structures? There are no temporary structures that may need to be safe and motion of said structures is also avoided.4 Any electrical equipment? The electrical equipment used is correct for the purposes and had been previously installed knowingly safely. 5 Manual handling? The only needed handling would be of the camera's and none of the "crew" would struggle with that.6 Tripping hazards? The cables and wires are the highest risk of tripping though with only having few people on set then the risk should be minimized. Cables in good condition.7 Vehicles in the studio? There is no current or known need for vehicular aid within our work.8 Special effects/Pyrotechnics/Lasers/Strobes? We may, possibly be endeavoring to use strobes however the rest of the options seem hugely unlikely.9 Children on site? He will be supervised by the "crew"10 Stunts/ Novelty construction? Erm, we kinda don't need any stunts within our production.11 Weapons/ Firearms/ Crossbows? We are strongly dismissed from the use of any of these items.12 Practical Fires/ Cookers (Butane/ Propane?)? Also an unneeded and overzealous application for an A2 media piece of work.13 Smoke generators? We may have a smoke machine depending on weather or not we are allowed it within the studio area.14 Controlled substances? There is a very minimal set-up requirement, we seem to be safe.15 Water? Not within our production.16 Glass? The glass in in the form of a window. And so the safety element is high already.17 Confrontational subject matter? The topic is broad and speaks to all and so is not confrontational at all.18 Animals? No!19 Audience require extra super vision? They will be around 17+ and so will be able to be responsible for their selves.20 Wheelchairs? nope21 Health conditions? no22 Smoking? possibly?

update

We are currently in the preproduction stage of our music video. We seem to be going very well as for we are ahead of the scheduled lessons. Today we are meant to be doing a storyboard, though we completed that at least a week ago. So we are instead scanning the storyboards onto our computer [Joel]. [Kyle] Well Kyle is currently starting on the essential risk assessment. [Tom] Tom who will soon be leaving us is editing the storyboard after noticing he has missed a slide or two, so he will be finished shortly. [Ryan] (Currently not in lesson) Ryan joined recently and will take the place of Tom. He is currently in work with the location shots that Joel and I took last lesson. A member of another group has slowed the operation by taking the scanner, so we must wait before Joel can continue in scanning work in. Granted I would not have minded if he would have asked, this however was not the case, callow belligerences have now halted any work that Joel can do. Overview of entirety; Curtis: I have so far worked closely with Joel in scripting the story and deciding on what the music video will actually be like. Also we (Joel and I) have taken shots of the external location. Joel and I are generally working pertaining to the story, we try to fit story and song, and work out ways to circumvent any problems. We also both did the treatment many lessons ago. Joel: Work previously mentioned, due to him working closely with me. He also came up with many good ideas that will be implicated later in the filming and editing. Kyle: Kyle is a member of the band that we are doing the song from. He also had many good ideas for the music video and the direction that it is to follow. He also aided in fitting the lyrics with the video. Kyle also is writing the risk assessment. Tom: Tom has redone the storyboards in neat for us and is still doing work even though he knows he won't be coming back to this collage. Tom has also just made a funny video to boost morale. Ryan: The preliminarily mentioned new member of our group, has yet to do much work due to only recently joining, though I am sure he will create some highly important work soon to come.

treatment first draft

Scene 1 – Verse 1 The opening sequence of the music video is of the camera focused on letters on the floor, the camera slowly panning up and around to reveal the lead vocalist laying in a pile of love letters from a relationship on his bedroom floor whilst him singing to the pre recorded backing track which will be played whilst recording. Scene 2 - Chorus 1 We now cut to a shot of the band on stage but only the lead vocalist is visible, the other members are blacked out, in the dark. We would also have letters from the initial scene falling on the band members. The singer would then fade away to the lyrics "memories that are clear to fade" Scene 4 - Verse 2 We then see her leading him into the woods as he goes running after her, as he does he loses her hand and they get separated. With a camera shot of there hands moving further and further away, this then goes to a shot of the lead singer running four different ways to find the person he’s just lost. We would have camera shots of him running up to the camera and high angle shots to give the feeling of being lost. Scene 5 - Chorus 2 In this scene we will be a collection of shots of he whole band performing. We are also hoping to get in an audience to give more of a feel of a live performance. Tenacious D Tribute
Genre: heavy metal

usual generic conventions: Singing directly to camera, comedic moments, satanic imagery and lyrics relate to the video

the song tribute was first wrote for the tenacious D shorts on HBO The Greatest song in the world

the music video begins with a short non music intro and is for their fans and goes back to their short tv days

the music video is filled with comedic parts like the devil and the booth this is for the jack black fans and is related to all other tenacious D music videos.

the lyrics of the song are directly realised on screen this is unconventional in metal music as lyrics often coincide but are rarely true to the exact word

tenacious D don't have the whole band on screen in the video as this music video is more like a short film.

Music Video analysis 1

Rob Zombie's Living Dead Girl

Genre: Heavy Metal

Usual generic conventions: instrumentals in the video, The whole band onscreen at once playing their instruments
non narrative based and loose connections with lyrics

analysis: Start with iris wipe into an iris shot, film grain and flicker thus giving the appearance of an old silent film giving an unusual style then the title appears in the style of the old silent films, throughout the whole of the music video the iris shot, film grain and flicker convey age and helps the viewer quickly understand that it is set in the late 18
00's early 1900's onwards this fits in with the lyrics to convey the narrative of a strange doctor reanimating a woman. The videos derives its imagery from a 1920 silent film, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari with Rob Zombie in the role of Caligari, and the eponymous girl in the place of Cesare the Somnambulist. The video imitates the appearance of aged, silent films, using inter-titles and artificially grainy and jumping film. Like Caligari, it also uses black and white film that has been tinted sepia, aqua, and violet for expressionistic effect. The video was directed by both Joseph kahn and Rob Zombie.
The video is typical for Rob Zombies work using surreal imagery and including comic moments His video work can be likened to the work of Rammstein who also use over the top imagery and comic moments for the same effect although their videos often don't correlate to their lyrics, and they often have the whole band instrumentals not just as a narrative

media task video comparison

For the first task we were asked to find similarities between two different music videos in the same genre

I choose the metal genre and the songs H.I.M: Wicked Game and Rob Zombie: Living Dead Girl

In the music video for Wicked Game H.I.M follow the conventions more strictly than in Rob Zombies Living dead girl E.g the whole band can be seen in wicked game and the video is performance and narrative whereas in living dead girl only Rob Zombie can be seen and the video is a homage to The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (click here for more info on living dead girl). There are similarities in both H.I.M's Wicked Game and Rob Zombies Living Dead Girl both are dark in lighting and nature with the imagery being
dark and satanic at times both videos have moments that can be perceived as humorous. both videos have the lead singer singing straight to the camera and the audience, both videos have a narrative and story.

in conclusion both videos follow the general conventions of metal and both have their differences. most metal videos seem to have these main points: singing directly to camera, dark often satanic imagery, the whole band preforming at some point in the video, humorous moments and dark dank colours.
